Captains Blog 19, saturday, 2007

Been here over a week now, time for an update. We're now in the city of Dohuk, West North Iraq Kurdistan (or something). Time spent teaching = 0 hours. Some things we've done here in no particular order:

Saw Saddam's palace - now ransacked
Given blood (not related to the above)
Visited the army (Adrienne cracked onto a 3 star general)
Learnt our first Kurdish word - spaz (thankyou)
Cut Alex's hair (very badly)
Met the ex-head of Kurdistan MI6 (an avid fossil collector!)
Watched top gun (the power cut out when Maverick had 2 bogeys on his tail - we'll never know what happened)
Visited the Turkish and Syrian border
Electrocuted mosquitoes

For a while we've been a bit edgy coz we haven't had any work, but have had to stick around but the last couple of days we've been able to get outside the city and see some of the beautiful mountain scenery. We also don't know which city we'll end up in so are a bit unsettled. The security situation seems to be fine - there are lots of police check-points but things are calm. Everyone is vigilant and we have someone with us most of the time. There is a lot of history here so we're trying to learn some of that. Anyways, I'll let Adrienne have a word.... Alex

First of all, I didnt "crack on" to the army general as Alex puts it. Alex for some reason just found it very entertaining that I chose to strike up conversation with him. I guess next time I'll pay more attention to those stars! Other than that Alex is pretty much spot on with everything. As for some things on the list, keep in mind we're not working at the moment so we need ways to entertain ourselves. WE're not teaching due to plans falling through etc. Definitely ready to get at it. In general, we cant complain. The owners are treating us great, the people are hospitable, and the country is quite nice although as you may imagine not the easiest place to travel around. The lonely planets are a little out of date for this region!

That's the report for now. If anyone reads this please please leave a comment. Remember we aren't working and have a lot of time on our hands so we check for comments faithfully-electricity willing that is. Thanks to those who have left comments!

Big hugs we miss you all!

Adrienne and alex

Hi,
Great to hear what is happening. Sounds as though they realise how important you are.
You've probably seen that Bath RFU lost in the Challenge Cup. No Heineken next year.
Did you know you are near the area where the"world''s oldest existing trace of the production of barley beer...." has been discovered? Coincidence?
We are two and a half weeks into our new lives, jobs and home. Having a blast!
Have the owners handed over any scheckels yet?
Keep up the good blog.
Love you.
